Birthday Weekend

24.9.12

What a weekend! It’s hard to believe, but our oldest turned eight! Baking is not my thing, but I needed a gluten free cake and had the mix on hand, so I thought I’d give it a shot this year. I used his love for baseball as the starting point for the cake decorating… just added some icing sugar and m&m’s! And, do you notice that the two balls are touching so that it creates a subtle 8 shape?!! Yeah, maybe it’s not super obvious, but I love that it’s there.

The take home gifts this year were water guns, because we’ve had such great weather this September! I handed one out to everyone as they walked in the door, and then sent them to the backyard for “target practice”, which consisted of two saw horses and a 2×4 lined with empty containers. This was a HUGE hit! If you’re looking for game ideas for older boys, I highly recommend this!

I hope you had a good weekend too! What did you get up to?

All Fired Up

We added a fireplace to the backyard this weekend! And what better way to welcome it to the family than with a S’mores roast! We’re having an extended summer with all this warm weather, so I see a repeat in the very near future. But first, we need to get those bright yellow stickers off the front!

Hope your weekend was fun too! What did you get up to?

Memories of Tofino

06.9.12

As back to school busyness takes over, I can’t help but miss summer holidays. Do you find yourself doing that too? We just got back on Monday from Tofino, a beach town on the Westcoast of Vancouver Island. Surfing, bike riding, beach combing and boat rides on water taxis kept everyone happy.

I would venture a guess and say that this enormous beer (called a “Growler”) from the Tofino Brewing Company was Jason’s favorite discovery of the trip. I am not a fan of beer, but I loved the bottle!

We stayed at Pacific Sands Beach Resort this year, and the boys asked at least once a day whether we could move in! With a view like this, yes, please! It was so beautiful, and kid friendly too! Of course you can’t stay in a place like this without coming home and searching all the property listings, right?! A girl can dream…

PS – I posted about our 2010 trip to Tofino here.

Back to School

05.9.12

Our youngest started kindergarten today! And his older brother is now in grade 3. It’s hard to believe. The moment I thought would never come is actually here. Although I’m thrilled to start working during daylight hours instead of the midnight shift, I have to admit that I’m a little bit emotional about the whole thing! This is one of those moments where I kind of want to stop time and soak it all up slowly.

Robot Themed Party

24.8.12

I have to share some pictures of the adorable robot-themed birthday party we went to last weekend. Our fabulous neighbors are responsible for all of this cool stuff. So, if you’re trying to find some ideas for a child’s party, read on!

After that amazing cake, I think my favorite part was the giant robot built for a game of toss. The colored circles are taped onto the back of the plywood robot frame so that they break when the ball hits the center. Pretty great idea!

All the kids had a blast creating their own robots with the help of the adults. All you need is some empty tin cans and supplies from the dollar store. And magnets came in handy to stick on the bolts.

And no party is complete without a pinata, right?! This homemade pinata was amazing! I don’t know why I didn’t think to move the sunscreen out of the way for the shot. Ha!

My oldest son’s birthday is coming up next month, and this has inspired me to get going on the planning for it! But first I need to focus on the weekend ahead… so many exciting plans! Have a great weekend!

Milk Art: Take Two

6

20.8.12

Inquiring minds want to know! My Milk Art post brought many questions about whether or not I’d attempted to transfer the effect onto paper. I hadn’t, but since I would happily repeat this one, I thought I’d give it a shot.

Well, here is your answer… it does NOT work. Not well at least. All the detail and vibrancy is lost as soon as the paper touches down, and that really is the best part. If you are looking to make this into long lasting art I would suggest that taking a picture is your best bet.

Happy Friday & Wedding Pics

27.7.12

I thought I’d leave you with a picture I took of my sister’s gorgeous wedding bouquet. It’s hard to believe that it was almost a month ago that she got married! And I can’t believe she’ll be moving away in less than a week!

These sweet shots of my beautiful sister Louisa and her husband Steve are from photographer Linda McCague. You can see more here.

Have a great weekend! I’m sure there are many happy brides this weekend with the weather we’ve been having!

Greetings from Whistler

25.7.12

Okay, so we aren’t actually in Whistler anymore, but haven’t we all received postcards from people after they’re already back from holidays. Consider this one of those! 😉

We usually head up to Whistler at least once every year. It’s so beautiful, and it really helps to unwind when you’re surrounded by nature. Between the hotel pool and all the lakes the kids are pretty much swimming the whole time, so they sleep well. I officially love family bike rides that end in everyone jumping off a dock and then drying off in the sun.

How about you? Do you have a spot that you visit for a yearly escape?

Lego + Water

6

23.7.12

It all started when Ben wanted to play Lego inside, and Cole, outside. I broke the stalemate by introducing a water hose. Lego reached a new level of fun!

If you spray the hose just right it creates some major whirlpool action! The boys had a blast watching their figures whipping around, and taking turns throwing in extra figures. When the tub filled up I watered the plants to empty the tub, and the fun started all over again. By the end of it, everyone was wet, and happy!

I hope you had a fabulous weekend enjoying some summer fun!

Summertime

7

13.7.12

I have been enjoying moments like this lately. The boys seem to have found their groove after a few weeks of adjusting to being around each other constantly. Their sweetness makes me want to hold onto them tightly with both arms and never let them go. They are growing up so fast it’s kind of hard to believe. The exhaustion of the newborn stage feels like just yesterday! But the reality is that the countdown to both of them being in full time school is on. Seven weeks. I am determined to make the most of these short summer months.

I hope you’re enjoying the summer as well! Have a great weekend!!
