Six years and two children ago we bought an Ikea Ektorp couch and chair. We knew that since we were going to have a baby that a slip covered sofa was the way to go. (Of course, red wine spills are a good reason too!) The furniture has been well used over the years, and the covers have been washed many, many times. After six years of pulling on and off those white slip covers, the fabric that covered the cushion filling was starting to tear. But life gets busy, and I didn’t think about it too much. While hunting through files searching for tax papers, I happened upon the receipt for the furniture, and a paper saying that they had a ten year warranty! I called Ikea to inquire about getting some new cushions… but they did much better than that!!! SIX YEARS later, Ikea gave me a BRAND NEW COUCH & CHAIR!! It’s official, I love Ikea.
Oh, and for the curious ones, this is our family room. I’ll show you more one day, I promise. ; ) It’s a work in progress…
Okay, it’s not really the best day ever, it’s just something my youngest says occasionally which we’ve happily adopted and now inject into everyday conversations, like BEST. COFFEE. EVER., etc. You get the picture. Of course, in four year old speak it sounds more like BEST. DAY. EV-AH! which really makes me want to squeeze him I find it so cute.
So, since it’s that time of year when we thank the amazing teachers who managed to survive another year of our children without taking stress leave, I thought that I would make a simple typographic card along those same lines. And so BEST. TEACHER. EVER. this one’s for you!

I was thrilled to attend to the media night preview for IDSwest tonight! There was so much inspiring design on display, such as Judson Beaumont’s Hollow Chair, Sarah Peloquin Ladany’s Geodesic-Wares, and Tom Dixon’s Etch Lights, to name a few.
The highlight of the night for me was the L41 Ultra Compact Home by Michael Katz Architecture. This ultra-compact home is affordable, sustainable, high quality, high-design and energy efficient! So much in such a small space!
Architect Michael Katz & Artist/Designer Janet Corne, with their creation.
Where you would usually see a back splash, the sleek windows let in light.
Barbara checking out the hidden storage space above the work area.
Barbara of hodge:podge and I carpooled to the event, so there was plenty of design and blog talk going on, along with some wine and yummy tacos! A great night in my opinion!
If I’ve peaked your curiosity, you should really check out IDSwest in September! It will be at the New Vancouver Convention Centre September 29th – October 2nd. I know I’ll be there!

Well, this weekend has definitely started out on the right note! My wonderful man surprised me with these beautiful flowers last night. A burst of color is perfect on this cold and rainy day. Aren’t the colors amazing?! A great reason to test out my new birthday present… the Canon Rebel T3i! I am so excited to move into the land of the DSLR! I’ve got a lot to learn, switching from a point & shoot, so I’m looking forward to the photography workshop that Darryl is putting on for some of us design bloggers! I can’t wait!
Here are some links I found this week that I thought you’d like:

I found Rosenberry Rooms today and fell in love with their beautiful pillows! I have an undying love for linen, ever since our holiday in France, and these beautiful textured & patterned pillows make me want to fill my house with it!
I met for lunch with some of the Canadian Design & Lifestyle Bloggers West yesterday in Vancouver at the Banana Leaf Restaurant – what a lovely bunch they all are! It was great to be able to put voices to the faces of some of the blogs that I’ve been reading. I came away inspired, and looking forward to our next meet up in September! If you are a Canadian blogger living in the West, and thinking about joining, please do, we’d love to have you!

This is how the backyard looked at the end of last weekend. We’ve had drainage problems since we moved in, thanks to the clay-based soil, but we met with a landscaper last year who explained how to fix the problem. Just look at this perfect trench my man dug! 12″ wide, 16″ deep all the way. The graphic designer in me loves that he’s made a perfect y shape. And that’s only one section – he’s dug around the entire perimeter of the yard! Go Jason!
So, while Jason and the boys are hard at work cleaning up that mess, I’ll be working hard at others things… such as eating, chatting, and shopping! Tomorrow is the first time I’ll be meeting up with the Canadian Westcoast Design & Lifestyle Bloggers!! I’m so excited to meet everyone! I’m sure I’ll have some pictures to share!
Have a great weekend!!
I’ve been having fun lately planning a trip to New York in the fall! I’ll be heading there with my friend, and fellow blogger Sherri. We’ve been looking at renting an apartment, and I just had to show you some of the amazing apartments that we’ve seen so far! Check out that wallpaper in the top picture! And the apartment below totally reminds me of Nate Berkus for some reason… I want to move in. Now I just have to make a decision!!
Does anyone have a favourite place that they stay when they’re in New York? What area? Favourite restaurants? Must see shops? If you’ve got any suggestions, we’d love to hear them!
Time to put my one of my birthday presents to good use! This recipe makes the best ever gluten free chocolate chip muffins! For those of you that are gluten free, enjoy!
I combined the following to add up to 1 3/4 cups GF Flour:
- 1/4 Cup Potato Starch
- 1/4 Cup Brown Rice Flour
- 1/4 Cup White Rice Flour
- 2/3 Cup Sorghum Flour
- 1/3 Cup Tapioca Flour
I then added the following:
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 1/2 tsp xanthan gum
- 2 TB organic cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup milk
- 1/3 cup + 2TB canola oil
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Mix all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Pour all of the liquid ingredients into a measuring jug. Mix the dry and wet ingredients together. Spoon into the prepared muffin tin. Sprinkle some extra chocolate chips on top and then bake for 20 minutes or until the muffins are dark, risen and springy.
Makes 12 Mmmmuffins 🙂

I’ve had lots of interest over at Etsy from people wanting more pics of the other colors of JuJu Hats… so I’ve taken some more pictures. You can now see the purple, white, and pink options on my Etsy site, as well as the three available sizes. This is the large white juju hanging out on my new entryway mat. I picked it up at Costco on this wonderfully warm and sunny Sunday.
I hope you’ve had a fabulous weekend!
