We’ve got a visitor on the blog today! Say hello to Sam everyone! This is us at Chelsea Market on a trip to New York. Sam is second from the left, in between Sherri and Claire. It feels like so long ago, and looking at this pic makes me want to jump on a plane! But, now that you’ve met Sam, you really need to take a peek into her amazing dining room transformation!
Isn’t it great! Sam wanted to change up her table and chairs, and with just a little paint that she already had on hand, and some interlocking boards, she has completely transformed the room for only $10! Pretty amazing DIY, don’t you think?
Thanks for sharing Sam!
[ UPDATE: I’ve received lots of emails with questions since this post, so I thought I’d answer them here so you don’t need to go searching through the comments if you have a question. Firstly, Sam used a couple cans of leftover FAT Paint chalk paint, mixed together, to come up with her table color. Because she was using this type of paint she didn’t sand or prime, just painted it on! She bought all of the boards in one bundle from Rona (Canada’s home improvement store) for $6! She nailed on the wood top. Hope that helps! ]

My dining room table has hope! It’s exactly the same one …… or very similar to it. That transformation kicks butt over any I’ve seen lately. Nice job Sam! Thanks for sharing Rosa!

Woah! I never would have recognized it as the same dining set! The “after” has soooo much character!

Great makeover! It looks fresh and new – love that it was so easy!
Tia November 4, 2013 12:56PM
Nice update! Makes it such a unique piece; love the shade of grey you picked for the chairs too π
Michelle November 29, 2013 3:25PM
Did you glue the boards on?
Missy P. December 7, 2013 3:25PM
How did she adhere the boards to the table top? Glue or nails? And what color paint did she use for the chairs? I have this exact table and chairs and have been wanting to make it over also! Love it!
Gracie January 4, 2014 3:30PM
How did she get the boards to stay in place?
Rosa January 7, 2014 4:39AM
Hi Gracie & Ainsley, thanks for stopping by the blog!
Sam nailed the boards onto the table… but I can imagine that some wood glue would also help keep them from shifting over time. Good luck!
Ainsley January 7, 2014 4:31AM
Yes. How did they adhere the boards?
My January 13, 2014 8:07AM
Did she have to prime before painting.
Rosa January 14, 2014 6:31PM
No, she used FAT Paint chalk paint, so she didn’t sand or prime first.
April January 13, 2014 4:03PM
Where did she find and buy those long boards?
Rosa January 14, 2014 6:32PM
She got the bundle of boards for $6 from RONA.
Jessica Stemm February 7, 2014 6:08PM
Does food get stuck in the cracks? We have a one year old and baby on the way…wondering if it’s functionally for families with small kids or a way to tweak it so it works for lots of messy foods:)
Laura S. May 9, 2014 1:48PM
This is also my question. It looks like food my fall between the boards. I did note that it said these were interlocking but still, looks like some wide gaps there.
Misty williams February 16, 2014 4:53PM
Do you have to worry about food getting in the cracks? Is it easy to clean?
Sarah February 10, 2016 1:56AM
I did this same thing to my table, food does get in the cracks. I just use a tablecloth when my child is eating!
Christine February 19, 2014 3:20AM
AWESOME! Did you protect the wood slats with sealer? Or did you sand them to avoid splinters?
I love the look!!!! GREAT job!
Maura May 20, 2014 12:43AM
Can’t find this wood anywhere!?!?
Juju January 15, 2015 10:17PM
Looks like tongue and groove flooring.
Mindee May 20, 2014 7:46PM
So you are saying she stained the wood planks with FAT Paint chalk paint? Is that a paint you can buy in the US?
Rosa May 20, 2014 11:13PM
Sam used chalk paint on the table base and the chairs. The top was left untreated. Hope that helps! π
Samatha September 19, 2014 7:52PM
What color did she use on the chairs?
Rosa December 4, 2014 6:05AM
I’ll ask her and let you know Samantha. Thanks for stopping by! π
Erin March 29, 2015 11:57PM
I would love to know this well.
Penny December 2, 2014 5:54AM
The ends looks unfinished and like the corner will catch things, and what a nightmare for a table with cracks like that! Eek. it’s ok to look at but far from functional for a dining table. But ok.
Stephanie Soto December 3, 2014 2:57PM
You can put plate mats when eating. Its a rustic style.
Rosa December 4, 2014 6:04AM
Hi Penny, thanks for visiting. I think Sam’s table is great! And, it’s functioning for her, so I guess you’ve been proven wrong! π
Ashley December 2, 2014 10:56PM
I like the idea, but think it wasn’t executed well. It appears as though the boards do not go all the way to the sides of the table. What happens if you spill something on top of the table? The liquid would go through the gaps and there would be no way to clean it up since the boards have been nailed down. If the boards were tongue and groove and went all of the way across the table, it would work better I think. Cute idea though.
Rosa December 4, 2014 6:02AM
Glad you like the idea Ashley. π The boards are tongue and groove.
Stephanie Soto December 3, 2014 2:54PM
Can you do this with a high square table too? Also is the wood glued to the table?
Rosa December 4, 2014 6:00AM
I’m sure you could do it to any size table if you can find the right size of wood. And no, the planks are nailed in place. π
Katelyn December 7, 2014 11:44AM
Does food falk in the cracks?
Kay December 21, 2014 3:34AM
We are thinking of a similar undo and are thinking of using clear caulk to fill in the cracks.
Rosa December 22, 2014 5:53AM
Great idea Kay! π

Leisa July 30, 2015 11:45AM
If I put a coat of Polyurathane on the top of the boards to help catch food thru the cracks, will that change the look of the table boards? Is there something else that I can use to seal between the cracks to make it easier to wipe food, that won’t change the look of the boards?
Thanks leisa
Rosa August 3, 2015 3:29AM
Hi Liesa! I’m not sure. I’d suggest testing a coat on your boards to see if it will change the look. Good luck! π
SandyH August 4, 2015 10:39PM
Hi, this is EXACTLY what I’m looking for, but was wondering how the nail heads were hidden since the planks were left unpainted.
Rosa August 10, 2015 12:55AM
Glad to hear it’s what you were looking for! π The boards were just glued in place.
Ana August 6, 2015 12:39AM
Were the boards at all sanded?
Rosa August 10, 2015 12:56AM
Hi Ana, No the boards were used as is to maintain the look.
Kourtney August 7, 2015 5:24PM
What did they use to attatch it to the table? And what type of boards are they
Rosa August 10, 2015 12:57AM
They are glued on to the table top. They were just scrap wood, so not sure what exactly they were. π
Allie August 17, 2015 11:22PM
I’m so glad I came across this. I have a junk table I bought from Overstock (that they eventually refunded me for and let me keep the piece of crap) that is HIDEOUS. I’ve been wanting to buy a new table but the cheapest I can find that’s decent is $300. I think this will work and be pretty simple since Home Depot will do cuts. The tongue & groove flooring is $5 per 8″ panel and I would need maybe 3. It costs $5 for a can of paint and I have the stuff to make it into chaulk paint as well as sealer.
Thanks for the awesome suggestion! π
Rosa August 17, 2015 11:35PM
Yay! That’s great to hear Allie! π I’d love to see your After pic!
Best, Rosa

Thanks Jen

We’re making this as we speak! Ill post a pic when completed!! We’re sanding the edges and putting some stain we have at home so they have a more finished look. I can’t decide on a hair color. Any suggestions? All our wood trim is white, the kitchen cabinets are that light oak along with the floor being a similar light color….

Patty August 11, 2016 1:22PM
This is so gorgeous I’m so glad I found it on Pinterest! I have a now hideously beat up from wear and tear dining table & four chairs very similar look. I’ve had it for ten years and it has so many water ring stains on it as well as a stain from when I accidentally spilled acetone nail polish remover on it yikes! I was going to have to pay someone to haul it to a junk yard. This is totally my solution! Quick question though my table and chairs are likely not real wood, but rather cheap laminate as its from World Market. Pardon the 101 question as I’m new to DIY. For painting the table, was her table wood or laminate? I’ve read up on how to’s for painting laminate furniture and know it’s possible with some extra steps. Is there anything unique about the paint she used that skips those steps if it’s laminate? (Bc that would be awesome, less work for me!) I would love to see photos from the gals above who said they were going to make a few tweaks to make the wood on top of the table more functional for their needs like poly or sealing it to prevent food from getting in between cracks. Did you receive any you could perhaps post? Although I don’t have young children to worry about their safety, I am a 33 year old who spilled acetone nail polish on her own kitchen table haha so I’d like to semi childproof it for myself π However while still maintaining as close as possible the original look/design intent as shown bc it’s gorgeous!!! What type of glue did she use to secure the wood pieces on top? I was confused if she nailed or glued but now it seems it’s glued correct? Thank you so much! Best, Patty in Washington, DC
Rosa October 25, 2016 5:44AM
Sorry for the delay Patty, I am not checking my blog as often as I used to! I’m so glad to hear that this post helped inspire you to redo your slightly marked table! π I know that Same used Fat Paint, and so my advice would be to email the company and I’m sure they would be the best source of info on how to use their paint. As for glue, I’d suggest going to your local hardware store and asking which glue would be best, since I’m not sure what brand was used here. I haven’t received any before & after pics that were inspired by this post, but if I do I’ll be sure to post! Thanks for popping by! And good luck!
