Hostile Takeover

There are toys EVERYWHERE right now. I think that they are conspiring to take over the house… I can tell just by the look on their faces!

We are going to be ripping up the carpet in our youngest’s room soon, so it was emptied of all Lego, ending up on the train table, bumping the trains to the floor… and so on. Storage systems are going to be top of the list on my next trip to Ikea.

Happy Friday! And Happy Mother’s Day Weekend to all you moms out there!

A Place For Everything

Does anyone else feel the urge to organize? I sure do! My dining room table is a dumping ground for any item without a home. So, my goal this year is to find a home for everything. Things won’t be in their proper place all the time, because with kids that is unrealistic. Heck, for ME it’s unrealistic! But, I’m determined to make use of every inch of this house!

This antique fruit crate is a great addition above the coat rack in the entryway closet. It’s divided into three sections, so gloves, hats, and scarves all have their own spots. And, not having to hunt for a rogue glove among the scarves saves time when we’re trying to run out the door.

Herb pots play double duty as art supply storage next to the kitchen table. The kids take whichever pot they need to the table, and put it back into the empty spot on the tray when they’re done with it. Easy!

With kids comes a lot more books, which I love! But finding homes for all of them where they will still be seen is not always easy. I bought this antique tool box to store some of those books in our family room.

And last, but not least, this is my favorite drawer in our house right now. With the help of Japanese cups and saucers from this fabulous store, and a vintage cutlery holder, I’ve managed to put all the many batteries, tapes, screen cleaners, etc into one organized little spot!

How about you? Are you getting organized too? I’d love to hear if you have any tricks to staying organized!!

Spring Break, Spring Cleaning!

I hope all of you are enjoying your Spring Break so far!

We’re wrapping up our first week of Spring Break at our house, and making plans with friends for our second! The weather here is back to rain today, so it’s the perfect day to squeeze in some scrubbing…

I started wondering what chemicals were in our cleaning products around the time my first was born. I searched online, trying to find a cleaning spray that I could make myself, and this one caught my eye. It’s so easy to throw some together! This recipe works well on counters, toilets, floors, etc. I love that the vinegar and essential oils are all I smell when I’m done – and it’s safe for all of us! My cleaner (back when I had one!) even asked for the recipe so she could use it for her other clients!! So, for those of you that were asking me for the recipe, here you go! (And at the risk of sounding totally granola, I even have a recipe for laundry detergent if anyone is so inclined! LOL)

Cleaning Spray:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tsp borax
  • 32 oz hot water
  • 20 drops essential oil (optional, I use Orange Oil, or Lemon)
  • 1/4 cup liquid dish soap (add last)

Mix in a 32 oz spray bottle.

If you know that you’re never going to make your own cleaning products, but are thinking about trading in your current ones, go check out Every Little Bit. Two of my friends started this company a couple of years ago, and they can hook you up with non toxic cleaners, and just about any other green option that you might be looking for!

How about you? Do you have any dirty little cleaning secrets?
