He pleaded to use my “real” paints, and requested canvases to paint on for his birthday. Now he’s paintings a series of his favorite stuffed animals. Boy do I love this kid!! I couldn’t be more proud of my sweet seven year old.

I hope you had a fabulous weekend!

Seattle Roadtrip

03.1.12

I’m back in Canada! I know, I didn’t mention I was leaving, did I? Jason and I were able to steal away by ourselves to Seattle for three wonderful days. It had been way too long since our last visit!

Any good road trip needs reading material! Sibella Court’s Etcetera was in my stocking this year, since I loved her latest book so much. It was the perfect companion for our relaxing trip.

Pattern and texture are hidden everywhere – but they really pop in the city.  I was hoping that we’d see these yarn bombed trees that Janis mentioned, and we did! Aren’t they amazing!

I was eager to pop into the newly opened West Elm, (thanks to Michaela’s post!) and happily took home a couple of these lamps! I’ve been hunting for the perfect bedside lamps for the master bedroom forever! Finally, progress!

I’m always on the hunt for yummy food when I’m on holidays. Any restaurant that dedicates a portion of their printed menu to gluten free pancakes and french toast ranks high in my books! It was easy to see why Portage Bay Cafe‘s large space was packed out… fresh, organic, and local food. So good! (This pic shows the space decked out for a catering event… so just picture it without the tablecloths. ;)

All you design lovers out there would love Kobo – a fabulous discovery! Design books, art, Japanese ceramics, silk screened t-shirts, letterpress calendars, etc. This is the kind of store I always hope to find when I’m wandering in a different city! I took home this little robin print mounted on wood by Seattle artist Cody Blomberg.

Welcome to the New Year everyone!

The latest issue of Uppercase Magazine arrived in the mail this morning, and I just had to share the cover with you!! These crayons are carved by artist Diem Chau. I mean, really, carved crayons!! AMAZING! A colourful way to start off the weekend! Have a great one!

More Colors on Etsy

06.6.11

I’ve had lots of interest over at Etsy from people wanting more pics of the other colors of JuJu Hats… so I’ve taken some more pictures. You can now see the purple, white, and pink options on my Etsy site, as well as the three available sizes. This is the large white juju hanging out on my new entryway mat. I picked it up at Costco on this wonderfully warm and sunny Sunday.

I hope you’ve had a fabulous weekend!

JuJu Hat DIY

11

24.5.11

There are some benefits to having never seen a Cameroon headdress, or Juju Hat, up close and personal. If I had, then I may have been a bit more daunted to try and DIY this! For those of you obsessed with perfection, please squint when looking at the above pictures. ; ) Actually, I suggest everyone try that, since they do look pretty darn sweet in a somewhat blurry state.

When I was looking through my pictures of JuJu hats, they all seemed so textural, almost wooly. So, when I went on a field trip to Michael’s to see what kind of feathers they had to work with, I quickly changed course and headed over to the yarn section. (Partly because the price of feathers adds up very quickly, and partly because the lady warned me about just how long it takes to glue on feather upon feather upon… you get the idea. I’m all about the cheap and easy when it comes to projects that may or may not actually work out!) I do not knit, so I had zero idea what I’d find, if anything. I was surprised to find such beautiful colors woven together, and all the thickness and texture I was looking for! And, a new found desire to make myself a scarf for next winter… if I start now I may just have it done in time!

I’m working on a tutorial in case anyone else wants to make one of these wooly wall hangings. So check back tomorrow for that!

PS – Book club ladies, as you can see, I’m ready to go for the next two months! Jane Eyre is from my mom’s college days, so I’m hoping to make use of her notes! ; )

Soapstone Plaques

24.3.11

Now that my parents are empty nesters, their visits are often accompanied by bags containing random small items that they are trying to purge. Living in an 1800 sq.ft home has made me a ruthless declutterer (unfortunately this is not apparent from the state of our house most days!), so usually I tell them that they should just recycle or donate the items. But these two pieces from my mom’s most recent pile caught my eye. I think these tiny soapstone carvings by Canadian artist Al Wolf are perfect for the boys room! They would look great in a shadow box of some sort, or even just hanging on the wall!

Type Tuesday: Paper Cutting

Kate Forrester‘s work first caught my eye with her Christmas campaign for John Lewis, but more recently I’m loving her screen printed “My Home is Nowhere Without You” poster design. Check out her blog for more of her amazing talent.

Julene Harrison is another paper artist I adore who’s work was recently featured in Computer Arts Projects magazine! What a great gift idea for a first wedding anniversary – made with paper! Wish I’d thought of that oh so many years ago!! There are so many more of her wonderful designs to see on her blog, Made by Julene!

I happily discovered graphic designer Helen Foers’ beautiful paper cut cards recently on her Etsy shop Storeyshop. Love the simple, bold designs. And she’s got a blog too!

A big thanks to all these super friendly ladies for allowing me to share their talents! What do you think? Does it inspire you to get out an x-acto knife? I think I just may…

Out & About: RAW Canvas

27.2.11

Oh my goodness I had such a fun night! Met up with some friends from design school (we graduated a LONG time ago now, I’ll just leave it at that) and spent the night chatting and painting at RAW Canvas in Vancouver!! The music was perfect, the food awesome (how can I not love a menu that is TOTALLY gluten free except for the bread!!), and the people that work there were so friendly! Thanks for such a great night guys! Can’t wait to do it again!

This was the result of two hours of painting… not finished yet… but the process was so much fun! I always forget just how much I love to paint, until I do. As I stood there last night painting line upon line of trees, I found myself thinking about The Nester’s post… and wish all my friends that say they “can’t paint” could have been there with us last night. Making art is fun!! And anyone can do it!
